"I came to the realization the last three months of your life should be the best three months of your life. That's when I knew I needed to become a 'Midwife for Souls', supporting the birth to eternal life."
It was 1991 when my husband's aunt was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Kate and her sister Molly spent their lives together, no husbands and no children. Kate only had a few weeks left to live so my husband and I invited them to live in our home so Kate could transition with family by her side. Molly sat vigil with Kate only leaving for rest. It was during the final moments of transition that I experienced a true sacred passage and a life altering moment.
While Kate was under hospice care, I was busy raising two young energetic boys ages three and one. What a dichotomy to be in the beginning years of raising the babies and also supporting my aunt's dying process. It was a quiet morning and the hospice aide was taking care of Kate's. During Kate’s transition as she took her last breath, a single tear slid delicately down her cheek. It was such a precious moment and I realized the symbology of this tear. Kate was a giving me a sign of gratitude for the love and care she received. At the exact moment Kate was shedding her tear, the boys began to run wildly around the house screaming and arguing. Molly, Kate's sister, got distracted with the boys which kept her from being by Kate’s side. When Molly realized her sister had passed and was not in the room during her death, our lives changed forever.
Hours had passed, the coroner had taken Kate's body, and Molly was left alone in her loss and grief. Moments later my aunt was coming down the stairs with her suitcase in tow. She was angry, furious and headed for the front door screaming and blaming me for Kate’s death. Molly stormed out the house and never spoke to me again.
I was left standing by door in shock with tears streaming down my face. I couldn't understand what had just happened. I knew at that moment someday I would advocate for family members who are left behind. My vision and mission is to educate families about the transition process and create a sacred passage for all of those involved.
Years later, in 2006, I began to volunteer in a local hospice. Within a very short period of time I accepted a job as the Director of Volunteers and spent 5 years recruiting, encouraging and empowering volunteers in end-of-life support. I worked with family members educating and supporting the final stages of transition. It was during these hospice years that I found and fell in love with Healing Touch. In 2008 I received my first Healing Touch session, and when the session was finished I knew immediately I wanted to become a Healing Touch Practitioner. I spent the next three years developing my skills, bringing Healing Touch to the dying and their families. In 2011 I became a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner (HTCP).
Fast forward to 2015, while I was supporting a Healing Touch Level 1 class, a student from Texas shared her testimony and life as a Doula. She began telling the class that she also supported those in transition as an End-of-Life Doula. My ears perked up and every hair stood up on end and it was at this moment I knew my calling as a 'Midwife for Souls' would begin. I have been called to support the dying and my gifts as a Healing Touch Practitioner will support my role as an End-of-Life Doula. I am blessed to be able to walk this sacred journey with the families and their loved ones. I’m deeply committed to provide physical, emotional, energetic, informational and coaching support during life’s transitions.
In 2008, while working as the Director of Volunteer for a local hospice, I invited a woman, Victoria Stewart, to join our volunteer team. Victoria was a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner for people and animals. In order for me to understand the benefits of Healing Touch and the language in order to share with the hospice families, I scheduled an appointment. After the Healing Touch session, I sat up and looked at Victoria and asked, "What was that? I need to have it!"
As I journeyed towards certification as a Healing Touch Practitioner, I found it to be a remarkable time of self-discovery, healing and spiritual growth. Throughout my education I applied the techniques I learned to the hospice staff, families and my surrounding community. I supported a local coordinator bringing Healing Touch classes to the hospice nurses and volunteers. In 2011 I became a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner and began a practice in my home and offered sessions in a local retirement community. For two years I networked, created presentations to educate the community on the benefits of Healing Touch, and continued with my own development as a healer taking advanced courses. It was during one of these advanced classes I met a remarkable instructor, Janna Moll. While in the class I set an intention that I would somehow work, coordinator and/or mentor with this phenomenal teacher.
My husband and I were still living in Pennsylvania when I met Janna and we had no plans to move to Colorado. For many years Rik and I enjoyed being empty nesters but the home was feeling big and empty. We had been thinking of downsizing our home and decided to test the housing market. Call it Divine intervention, but our home was sold within two days from a YouTube video, receiving a cash settlement for our asking price. We hugged the family goodbye, jumped into our RV with our two beloved dogs and spent the next nine months traveling around the country. Through a course of events, Rik and I arrived in Colorado. In my line of work we set an intention for the healing of our clients. It was through this intention at an Advanced Hara Diagnosis and Treatment workshop back in November 2012, along with a series of Divine events, that in December 2013 Rik and I began our lives in Colorado Springs, Co. Now, as the National Education Coordinator for Energy Medicine Specialists, I work with Janna by coordinating coursework for advanced practitioners while building and supporting community. Through my education and experience, when the mind and heart are in congruency the universe must respond. The challenge is waiting patiently for the intention to manifest.
